I got RAOK'd!!!
Well, I got home from work today. Today was horrid. It's the
anniversary of my Dad's passing away 8 years ago. Seems like
yesterday. So, today was hectic and hard. Well, I got home and
BAM! I got ROAK'd! SOMEBODY anonymously sent me 3 skeins of
araucani nature wool chunky in the 'berry' colorway. Go to FuzzyMabel
it's color #116. Isn't it beautiful??????
I think I have enough to make either a lucy bag or my buttonhole
bag. I will have to figure that out tomorrow.
I would LOVE TO THANK the kind soul who brought this bit of sunshine
to me on such an otherwise dreary day. I only have a return street
address and zip code (not even the city and state!).
WHOEVER you are, thank you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

11 days and counting. . . .
Yeah, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in 11 days. ELEVEN DAYS!!!! That's less than 2 weeks! Yipppppppeeeeeeeeee! The blue knitters are all going to the movie together. Yee haw! I am still working on HiP and here's the picture to prove it: Only question is; am I going to be able to finish it in time???? I have to make some MAJOR progress as it is getting cold here and I will need a lot more length to be able to wear it properly. You might have noticed that I altered the striping pattern. I wanted a little bit of difference there. I am going to go back to the double striping and then back to the single and then the double once again. That should be about the right length. We'll just have to see.
On the warm hands KAL front, I started my first mitten ever. I did all of this in one day so I am pretty excited about finishing these up quickly. Here's what I have so far: (see picture)
I am using Elsebeth Lavold Angora in Burgundy for the cuffs and the flap opening. The mitten itself is from Mountain Colors Weaver's Wool in the Pine Needle colorway. Isn't it cool? I still have to kitchener the top, add the thumb and add the burgundy openings stitches (so there isn't a gaping hole) for the fingers flap.
Here's another shot of it (backside of the hand) with the finger flap up. I really like the idea of the flap so that I can use my fingers if I choose. The angora ribbed beautifully, is snug but soft at the wrist and keeps things warm and dry. I can't WAIT to get these done!I can't choose what to knit on every night. I want to knit on them all!!

The "Knitty Gritty" does it again. . . . .
Last month, Annie, came up with an excellent discussion question regarding why we all blog. She's at it again. Here's this month's question:

those formed by meeting friends face-to-face? Why or why not? **
So once again, I present you with my answer as posted on her blog. Please feel free to disregard as you so choose:
I have to hand it to you, you always find a way to make sure that you get us all thinking. As always (my disclaimer) the following are MY opinions and my opinions only. I respect everyone elses view on things. I am just about to ramble my own thoughts on the question at hand. OK, now that the legalities are out of the way. . . . . .
Online friendships vs. face-face????
I think that a friendship is a friendship. The manner in which the friendship is started is of little significance. What IS of significance is how the friendship affects those involved. The level of the commitment, intimacy between the 2 parties and the care between the 2 is the ruler by which a friendship should be evaluated. How a friendship is constructed or maintained is not or should not be a factor in the measurement on said friendship. How a person responds to someone else's needs and how the two interact is what establishes the 'importance' or 'meaning' of the relationship. Being in physical proximity to eachother is of little consequence if people aren't supportive of eachother. Listening to each other, supporting each other, boosting each other, laughing with, crying with, respecting each other for who you each are, reaching out to each other and helping each other; these are the measures of a true friendship. I have made online friends that are more supportive of me and who I am and what I need than the acquantances I see on a daily basis. A true friend takes you for who you truly are and loves you for that. No questions asked, unconditionally and as you are. That is how a friendship should be measured and I think that all that can certainly be fulfilled no matter whether you have 'met' the person or not.

Hopping Halloween Batman!
Ok so that was a lousy attempt at resurrecting an old show but, WOW did I get a great halloween surprise today. My F.A.B. secret pal sent me this! Can you believe all the goodies? I have a ball of Australian Merino in a yummy pumpkin variegated colorway, a package of peace of mind chewing gum (Lord knows I NEED that), her first 2 stitch markers ever (a funky spiky black and white ball and a spider one), a badge/ID holder with a heart (my all time favorite shape in the world), a pack of candy corn, a travel pack of candy corn facial tissues, and the best of all, a Red Cross commemorative knit kit for socks. I have been eyeing that for awhile (I am into all that kinda stuff) and she read that I love to knit socks and am volunteering for the red cross SOOOO, I got the kit from her. Isn't that just SOOOO COOL??! I can't wait to get my hands on that yarn. I have to line it up behind Xmas stuff, but STILL. Even if I don't get to it for awhile, I have it. Thanks Stacy!!!!!

Happy blogversary to me!
Well, it's my blogversary. Yeah! 1 year and I am still here. Unfortunately, no one took up my offer for the contest. Bummer. Oh well, I still want to celebrate so let's say that anyone who writes to me will be entered into a random drawing for the prize previously discussed, ok? Good. Now back to our regularly scheduled blog.
So although you may not know it from reading, I HAVE been up to quite a bit of knitting. I have been very proactive with my Carpal tunnel though. I am wearing my braces (I have one for both wrists now) whenever I am not knitting of asleep. Take THAT you lousy nerve endings! It's actually been helping. So here comes the knitting.
Ok, so for Lolly's Socktoberfest I am finishing up the second sock on my pair of socks. Yeah!
Tee hee, as I previewed this post I noticed that not only am I obsessive about matching up the striping as much as possible but that I laid the socks out so that the striping matched. Yikes! I am vowing at this very moment that my next pair of striped socks will not be identical. PERIOD. END OF DISCUSSION. (well, they ARE going to be for my DS and not me, but that's besides the point, right?) Hoo boy, I need to be less of a perfectionist with my knitting. DH finds it hard to believe since I am NOT that way around the house. Really. I'd show you pictures but then I would have to kill you.
So, from socktoberfest heaven, we turn out attention to ZARA. This is really turning out to be a quick and fun knit. I altered the pattern so that I did the body up to the neckline in the round. I didn't want any seams on this one. I have the body (up to the neckline and 1 1/2 sleeves done). Love the Reynolds Blizzard also. Very nice knitting.
Here we have the sleeves. Not too far to go now before I can seam and attach them to the body then do the neckline. When I originally saw this done, it was made in chocolate brown with black eyelash accent in the neckline. I wanted the pink but can't decide. Eyelash or no? Black, brown, pink or iridescent? What do you all think?
Now, we also have the newest WIP. Just started it on Tuesday at sit 'n knit. It's a beaded scarf from Lily Chin's Book Knit and Crochet with Beads. Great book by the way. Anywhooo, here is what I have so far:
And here is a close up of it. I just love the edge on this. The beads just "float" on the edge. Very Very Very cool! I know that's a louse picture of the edge but trust me, it's very cool. I am using Blue Heron rayon metallic and some very awesome coppery metallic beads. I can't wait to finish this one up either.
So, last but definitely NOT least, I went out tonight for a field trip sit 'n knit to Starbucks with my knitting pals. It was the first time we have met outside of the shop for our regular sit 'n knit. Here we are:
Right to left is Caroline, Cheri (my sensei), Lauren, Tammy, Amy and then little ole' me! We had a GREAT night and it was a fabulous way to end the celebration of my blogversary. Thanks girls. I love you all!

It's been almost a YEAR!
Well, my blogversary is just around the corner. October 29th will mark 1 year of the blog. Seems to have gone by way faster than I expected it too. Huh, well, in honor of this date, I am having a contest! What I would like is for all you WAY MORE TALENTED people out there to come up with a button for my site (sad 1 year and no cutesy button for moi!). Winner will be drawn randomly from all entries and I will ask for your permission to blazonly plaster your button all over!!! tee hee (really, if I had any clue on how to do that I would but, I am so NOT computer design saavy at all!).
Winner will have some yarn and goodies sent for their efforts and good wishes. Gotta go look and see what goodies I have. hummmmmmm,
On the knitting front, I have the body of Kara and 1 & 1/2 sleeves done! I need to pull out the camera and show the progress. Maybe tonight while DS is at PSR. I am also now working on a HiP scarf which I am PRAYING will be ready for the premiere of GOF! UGH! I wanted to do a sweater but these past few months have been CRAZY!!! Again, I will try to post pix.
I also need to post pix of my socks for Lolly's Socktoberfest. I REALLY need to get that camera out!
Lastly, on the Red Cross volunteering front, I have had 4 of the 5 recommended/required vaccinations and I getting the last one today. I also am completing the last session of training on Wednesday, October 19th. All my papers will be complete and handed in at that session and then. . . . . . . . I wait. Our hospital is sponsoring 40 employees to go with full salary and benefits paid by the hospital but there can only be 4 of us gone at a time. Well, there are 4 down there already and I don't know where I will end up on the waiting list. I'll keep everyone posted. In the meantime, I have to go and get my 'stuff' (sleeping bag, bug spray, antibacterial hand gel, etc., etc.). I have to figure out what knitting to take with me as well. My husband thought I was NUTS when I said that but I am actually even thinking of taking some extra needles, yarn and basic knitting instructions. If I am in a shelter and I can give someone in need the gift of knitting, hey, I am all OVER it! I am thinking that my best bet (for myself) is going to be socks, portable and take up very little room (I have to carry my gear y'know). I'll have to see what socks to take with.

I'm so lame
I got my first secret pal 6 package and my needle exchange earlier this week and I am just now getting around to posting it. SIGH.
sorry about that folks. Having another lousy week. Don't want to get into it really, let's just say, I hope the new meds work better. 'Nuf said?
OK, onto better and brighter things: YEAH!
Let's look first at my FABULOUS secret pal 6 package (this one arrived first):
This is the complete package. WOW! I love it all. What a great package don't you all think?

Yummy, Yummy, yarn. Oooh I just love Fall colors! Tee hee!
OMG!!!! The Godiva Dark Chocolate w/ Raspberry is my ALL TIME favorite chocolate bar. Plus I got some other yummies and fun stuff. Heaven!
My sweetie pie sitting very pretty next to the fall towels and candles. She matches the candles - too funny!

Blogging, etc., etc., etc.,
The following is a comment that I just made on The Knitty Gritty for her post asking the question: Has blogging about knitting (or just blogging in general) enhanced your knitting? If blogging has been a benefit to
your knitting, how? If not, why? I thought that it was an interesting enough post that I am copying and entering my comment below. Proceed as you wish.
Oh yes, I guess I am not the only 'can-opener' around. There are plenty others waiting and ready to let all those worms out and free! - WARNING: the following rantings are just one person's beliefs and should not be misconstrued as anyone elses. Also, said person (me) respects any and all opposing views/beliefs. You have been duly warned. You may now continue.
Blogging?, I think that it has helped me, not so much in improving my knitting per se, but moreso in exposing me to what others are doing and how to stretch and challenge myself. I feel more 'connected' to what is going on in the knitting world and not allowing myself to get pigeon holed into just one aspect or type of knitting/knitting experience.
I blog and read others blog to enrich my SELF. Would I like to see more traffic on my blog? Well, duh! There is always that child in us that wants acceptance and love and to 'fit in and belong'. Do I feel the rush of excitement when I get notified that somebody 'out there' has commented on my blog? Well, I would be silly to even think of denying that for the same reasons I noted above. However, that said, I still blog. I blog b/c of the (few) but precious friends I have acquired through blogging. I blog b/c I feel a bit more focused in my knitting and myself when I do. I blog to keep up with what's going and to make myself vulnerable to rejection b/c only in doing so do you have the opportunity of being accepted. I blog to keep track of what I am doing, going through, experiencing.
To blog is to keep fresh and new. To blog is to write things down and then let them go. To blog is to smile with, cry with, share with, and vent with others who may (or may not) have a word of encouragement or advice.
Should people blog? That's a personal question. I think that there are probably phases to blogging (much like a marriage) for anyone who blogs. E.g. The honeymoon phase when the world is your oyster and everything is good and right. The "what the heck was I thinking" phase when you can't believe you even started the whole thing. The "well, this isn't what I dreamed of but it's not all that bad phase" when you get slighted and embarrassed at your naivetee (sp?) about what this would really be like. The "I'm in love all over again phase" where you get re-energized and focused on what is at hand. Etc, etc, etc, . . . . .
The bottom line is that blogging is a different experience to different people and to make things that much more complex, it is a different experience at different times for each individual blogger.
However we all look at thisphenomena, one can never and should never judge oneself (or ones blog) by how popular they/it are/is or by how many friends/visitors they/it have/has (say THAT three times fast!). Do for you and your blog what you and your blog want/need. Quality not quantity should be the goal. No visitors? What the heck, be proud of what you write and accomplish and enjoy the fact that it is all out there for anyONE who may enjoy it.

Another Saturday night at home. Talk about not being a big drinker. I went shopping for my needle exchange buddy and my Secret Pal today. Yeah. I got quite a few goodies. Can't talk too much about them though or I will give myself away.

Nah, not really but I thought that was a pretty funny name. You guys know how much I dig these types of things.
Hanging out having a great little family evening. DH was home before I was home for once. DS was thrilled to eat pizza and wings in front of the TV while watching a new episode of Avatar. My sweet little puppy just sat at our feet nice and content to have us all together. I worked on the second hat for the 'peas in a pod'. I should be able to finish tonight. I am ready to switch to the DPNs for the top of the hat. My Zara sweater is coming along nicely and quickly. I am up to the armhole shaping already. Working in the round doesn't seem to be too bad for this particular pattern. I really like the way the Reynolds Blizzard is working up.
Well, I want to go finish the baby hat, check on Rita (I can NOT believe this) and get to bed. Tomorrow is DS first flag football game. From the scrimmage his team had on Thursday I think that it is going to be a LOOOOONG 45 minutes.
I'll fill you all in. My thoughts and prayers extend to all my knitting blog buddies down south. Keep safe and let us know real soon that you are OK. God Bless you all.

I really HAVE been knitting.
Really, no lie. I just haven't had the time to get the camera out to put it on here. So here is a post to catch everybody up on what's going on in knittingnurse land. First, I started a new project (shock, dismay, disbelief!). I am currently working on ZARA. Yeah! I saw this recently and thought 'this is my winter sweater project' woo hoo! I am using Reynold's Blizzard in color 641 (the bright pink). I am altering the pattern so that I can work the body and sleeves in the round until I get to the shoulder shaping. I think I will then place the body onto 2 circs to do the shaping and add the sleeves that way. Whaddya think? So far it's working out OK. I got gauge on try #1 (yeah) but I had to frog my medium and cast on for the large. I still think it might need some good blocking to fit as slouchy as on the picture. We'll see. Thankfully it is a bulky yarn and a fast knit. Pics would not really do much right now. I'll post when I get past the middle of the body portion, kay? :-P
OK, so what else have I been working on? Well, I have made 2 more baby caps. Another one in white with blues and now I am working on my "2 peas in a pod" hats. My officemate has a cousin who is expecting twins. I am going to make her a set of caps, one green with white accents and then a mirrored white with green accents. #1 is done and I will be starting number 2. So, here's what the first one looks like:
My officemate says her cousin isn't find out the sexes so the green and white was appropriate (plus it works in my whole 'peas in a pod' motif).
What else might you ask has this little nurse been doing? WELL (I am really psyched about this one) I finally finished the little black beaded knit bag that I was making! SEE?
She's so pretty and dainty and she looks like something you would find in an antique store. I finished her at my sit and knit and one of the girls said "She's just perfect for a girl to carry her . . . . . .MILK!" I said "WHAT?" and she went on to explain that all a girl needs when she goes out is her MILK. Money, Identification, Lipstick and Keys! How cute is THAT? Has anyone else ever had that before? I certainly hadn't but I love it. Tee hee!
She obviously still needs her little strap but that won't be anything now that the body is done and on the clasp. Yeah. DH is going to have to take me and her out on the town!
Lastly, I wanted to say that I have been selected as one of 41 employees at my hospital to be sponsored as a Red Cross Volunteer to aid in the whole Katrina Disaster. When all this happened many of us in the hospital NEEDED to go and do something. The hospital looked into it and then sent out forms asking for volunteers. 41 applied and were accepted (they needed to be sure that no one department would be dangerously short-staffed). We are all going to get our mandatory training for the Red Cross & vaccinations and be paid to do so. Red cross will supply the transportation and lodging but the hospital will also pay us our full wage and benefits while we are there. Only 4 of us will be gone at a time but we will be called for up to 2 weeks of volunteering. Just went to the informational meeting tonight. Have to do my training and vaccinations no later than November 1st. I will keep you all posted on that. We can be called to serve for ANY disaster but the hospital was pretty sure that the RC would be using us for the Katrina effort. Again, more details will come as I know more.
Lastly, for all my internet buddies being affected by Rita, I am praying for you and yours. My heart goes out to you all and I hope that God keeps you safe in his hands. Stay well and keep us posted.
I'll close with a gratuitous DS shot (at last friday nights HS football game with some of his buddies. Go DEMONS!)

Needle Exchange Questionnaire
Ok, I know that I have been a very BAD knitting blogger. I am knitting and I will post about it soon, 'kay? However, I must take care of business for the needle exchange so here goes:
1. What do you like to knit or crochet? (socks, sweaters, etc.)
I like to knit whatever strikes me at that moment. I DO love socks very
much though.
2. What fibers do you like?
I find myself liking 'natural' fibers more often than synthetics but I
have knit with just about everything.
3. What type of needles do you use most often?
For straight needles I like wood (rosewood, ebony, hardwoods, etc) but
for circulars, I love me some addi-turbos!
4. Do you like to knit in the round?
Yep!
5. Do you use a magic loop method or any other we should know about? Are you interested in learning a new method?
I knit straight, in the round on both DPNS and circulars and YES I know
and do knit via the magic loop method. If there are any other ways to
knit, I will try it.
6. Do you have a favorite place that you shop online? (knitpicks.com,
knitpixie.com, jimmybeanswool.com....)?
I like knitpicks and I have also ordered from patternworks. I tend to
buy from my LYS though more often than not.
7. Do you want to be surprised? then erase all your answers above and write

On a serious note.
My DH and I spent 3 1/2 wonderful years in The Big Easy while he attended Tulane. It is so difficult and painful to see all the footage of that wonderful city all GONE! I have been heart sick for days now. The immensity of this tragedy transcends all levels and I am heartbroken. We've always wanted to take DS back to see that grand lady of a city but she is gone. I hope that that spirit of what made her so wonderful will return when she is rebuilt but I fear that the "taste" of New Orleans will never fully be returned. So much of what she was had to do with the history, heritage and beauty of her old buildings and sites. The people there are so fabulous, loving and kind. It is horrible for me to see what they have had to endure from nature, the small amount of criminals that tarnish the overall goodness of the southern folk and the limitations of man to rescue/assist those in need quicker than is possible. I hurt and I cry every night while watching the news in the comfort of my soft bed, under the roof of my home, with ALL of my family and a full belly. What can I do??? I can do quite a LOT. Please, Please, Please consider going to Give a Little and donating WHATEVER you can. Drink less coffees, pops or bottled waters. Buy less snacks or treats. It isn't a huge sacrifice considering.
Understand that 30-40% of the Greater New Orleans population lived at or below the poverty level and 112,000 households owned no means of transportation. These people where STUCK! And that is just in New Orleans! To that we must add all the victims in Mississippi and Alabama.
Imagine no housing, no food, no water, no electricity, no phone, and for some, no word of other family members. Is it really too much to ask?

Stitch markers
Here is my present from Suzie. These are great! I love them. YEAH!
I love stitch markers. I recently started making them and can't get enough of them now. They are so pretty and handy and I am a gadget fanatic so of course I have a ton of them made up for my friends. I was lucky enought to win a contest on Suzie's very cute blog and got these very cute markers. Yeah for contests and generous talented people. Woo hoo!
Front of 'Tivoli". I need to get moving before it's too cold to wear it this year.
I started working on this in mid summer and I have not gotten around to finishing it yet. I've made a couple of baby caps, worked on socks, made a scarf and now I am trying to work on the UFO's so I am really going at this one. I have the back piece started and hope to go on it quickly. Last week I did quite a bit of KIP (knitting in public) and DS flag football practices. He was finally eligible to play this year and I think it's a hoot!
Will keep you all up to date on the football, knitting and stitch markers. I have picked up the spindle but I put it down quickly b/c before I know it a couple of hours have gone by and I have not done any knitting. I have to get the UFO piles down. MUST DO SO!
Ok, I will REALLY post about knitting next time. . . . :-)

Fall means "Caring Caps"
OK, so I have been posting as diligently as I should be. Is it just me or did the second half of the summer just whizzzzzzz on by??? So, I got some help from my blogging buddy Amy and she has now shown me how to do hyperlinks for my posts! Yeah for Amy. I truly do appreciate it.
Been doing a lot of blog reading but not much knitting. I am going to start in the Another Weasley? from the blue blog's Alison. I don't know WHAT potter related item I will be making. But I am making something!
I have quite a few UFO's to tackle but am getting "itchy" to start something 'fallish'. Must be good. MUST finished some FO's. . . . . . .
where is everyone? I miss you all.
